Tom Blackburn´s DriZzleR

Tom Blackburn did some modifications on his DriZzleR Gasifier here you see the complete changings and his post at the yahoo woodgasforum

Over the past few days I have perfected the drizzle feed system that maintains a flaming pyrolysis for my gasifier. Here are some of my findings. First off the grate had to go. I have migrated to a bowl type char holder that has never plugged, yet. In this bowl I have installed a upward pointing cone that acts as an adjustable restriction, similar to a needle valve. I can adjust the height of this and it will increase or decrease the vacuum level on the manometer. This tunes the flow through the restriction and makes good gas. Here are some pics of the feature.

The three air injection tubes are also gone. After my observations made during the "high explosive" incident, I came to the conclusion that a virtual tube could be made down the center of the fuel for maximum air flow. This is accomplished by feeding the perimeter and letting a natural inverted cone form in the center of the fuel bed. This forms a natural nozzle shape and rams the incoming air right where you want it, at the top of the char bed.

I have also made a purpose build hopper and auger feeder that is similar to a pellet stove unit. I used a 2" grain/bean poly auger and a pellet stove gear reduction motor. It is controlled by a couple of relays, one is a repeat type and the other is an interval type. This gives me a tunable band of "on" time that is similar to the way a fuel injector functions. Right now it is set at 3 seconds on and 18 seconds off. This auger feeds a rotary distributor that places the fuel around the periphery of the tube. I have found that the fuel likes to burn at this point first, because of the heat being transfered from the outgoing gas, through the wall. I took advantage of this to kind of pre-heat the incoming raw fuel. The distributor places the fuel around the outside, and at the same time a small scraper on the underside of the distributor pulls the fuel from this point that has had a residence time of about 2 minutes from the previous rotation, into the center drop point. This fuel in it's 2 minutes of time next to the wall has flamed off much of the nasties and is nearly char that falls into the center vortex to be gasified. This goes on hour after hour with no attendance necessary. Here are some pics.

For those who want to see it in action, here is a link to a short video.

And a more detailed video of the feeder in action

Happy Gassing!
